Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt (optional, for salted caramel)
  • Chocolate shavings or curls for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just blended.
  5. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and thin.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Remove cakes from the oven and let cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream, until smooth and fluffy.
  9. Once cakes are cooled, place one layer on a serving plate, spread half of the caramel sauce over it.
  10. Top with the second cake layer, then frost the entire cake with the buttercream.
  11. Drizzle remaining caramel sauce on top and sprinkle sea salt if desired. Garnish with chocolate shavings.
  12. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to set.

Notes

For an extra indulgent touch, warm the caramel sauce slightly before spreading to create a gooey texture, and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
