Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into chunks
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 (14 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
  • Cooked basmati rice, to serve

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine yogurt, garam masala, cumin, paprika, turmeric, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Add chicken pieces and mix well to coat. Marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight in the fridge.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion, garlic, and ginger; sauté until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  3. Transfer the onion mixture to the slow cooker. Add marinated chicken along with any remaining marinade and tomato sauce. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until chicken is tender and cooked through.
  5. About 15 minutes before serving, stir in the heavy cream. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  6. Serve hot over cooked basmati rice and garnish with fresh cilantro.

Notes

For extra smoky flavor, lightly char the chicken pieces on a grill or under a broiler before adding them to the slow cooker.
