Graduation Cap Cookies

Celebrate your graduation with these festive Graduation Cap Cookies, featuring rich chocolate and classic royal icing decorations perfect for any graduation party.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder (for chocolate cookie base)
  • Royal icing (for decoration)
  • Black food coloring
  • Yellow food coloring or edible gold dust (for tassels)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and cocoa powder.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat well.
  5. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until the dough forms.
  6. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness.
  7. Use a graduation cap shaped cookie cutter or a square cutter to cut shapes, then place on prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are set. Cool completely on wire racks.
  9. Prepare royal icing and tint portions black for the cap and yellow for the tassel.
  10. Decorate the cooled cookies to resemble graduation caps, piping the black icing for the cap top and yellow for the tassel detail.
  11. Allow icing to dry completely before serving or packaging.

Notes

For extra flair, add edible gold dust to the tassel icing or sprinkle with edible glitter for a celebratory touch.
