French Toast Bake

This French Toast Bake is a warm, comforting breakfast casserole made with custardy bread soaked in cinnamon-vanilla egg mixture, baked to golden perfection. Perfect for family mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of day-old French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Butter or non-stick spray for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Place the cubed French bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently with a spatula to ensure all bread absorbs the custard.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight, to let the bread soak completely.
  6. Before baking, sprinkle brown sugar and chopped nuts (if using) evenly over the top.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown and slightly crisp.
  8. Remove from oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup or fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

For extra richness, drizzle with warm maple syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar. You can also add fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream for a festive touch.
