Classic Southern No Sugar Cornbread

A moist and savory Southern-style cornbread made without any added sugar, perfect as a natural complement to hearty meals.

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease an 8-inch square baking pan or a 9-inch cast iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and eggs together until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  5. Fold in the melted butter until evenly incorporated.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan or skillet and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a richer flavor, serve warm with a pat of butter or drizzle with honey. Adding diced jalapeños or shredded cheddar cheese can also enhance this cornbread.
