Freshly baked blueberry bagels on white plate

Deliciously chewy blueberry bagels with a hint of sweetness, perfect for breakfast or a snack. These homemade bagels combine classic dough with fresh blueberries for a flavorful twist.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon cornmeal for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Gently fold in the fresh blueberries without crushing them.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball, then poke a hole through the center to form a bagel shape.
  7. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  8. Boil bagels in batches for 1 minute per side, then transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and dusted with cornmeal.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle coarse sugar or cinnamon on the bagels before baking. Serve toasted with cream cheese or your favorite spread.
