Ingredients

Scale
  • **For the Bread:**
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon lemon juice/white vinegar)
  • **For the Cinnamon Swirl:**
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • **For the Glaze:**
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (or heavy cream)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the dry, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter for the swirl.
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon swirl mixture evenly over the batter.
  7. Add the remaining batter on top, then sprinkle with the rest of the cinnamon swirl mixture. Use a knife or skewer to gently swirl through the batter a few times.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. While the bread cools, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract for the glaze until smooth and pourable.
  11. Once the bread is completely cool, drizzle the glaze generously over the top. Slice and serve.

Notes

This bread is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For an extra touch, warm a slice slightly before serving!
