Char Siu Chicken

Char Siu Chicken features tender chicken marinated in a sweet and savory Chinese barbecue sauce, then roasted to perfection for a flavorful and colorful dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp Chinese Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • Red food coloring (optional, a few drops)
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Shaoxing wine, oyster sauce, five-spice powder, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red food coloring if using.
  2. Place the chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish and pour the marinade over the chicken. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.
  4. Arrange the marinated chicken thighs on the rack, reserving the leftover marinade.
  5. Roast the chicken for 25–30 minutes, basting occasionally with the reserved marinade, until the chicken is cooked through and slightly charred on the edges.
  6. For extra char, broil the chicken for 2–3 minutes at the end, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  7. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  8. Serve with steamed rice and garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

For best flavor, marinate the chicken overnight. Serve with steamed jasmine rice and a side of stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
