Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (16-20 oz) Italian or French bread, preferably day-old
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 6-8 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, chopped fresh parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined and creamy. If using, stir in the grated Parmesan cheese.
  3. Slice the Italian bread lengthwise down the middle, or slice into 1-inch thick individual slices, being careful not to cut all the way through the bottom if keeping it whole.
  4. Generously spread the garlic butter mixture over the cut sides of the bread.
  5. Place the bread, buttered-side up, on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and crispy, and the butter is bubbly. For extra crispiness, you can broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  7. Remove from the oven, slice into desired portions (if not already sliced), and serve hot.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor and a beautiful golden crust, sprinkle a little more Parmesan cheese over the bread during the last 5 minutes of baking.
